Unit 12- Speciality Study Essay

My aim for this investigation was to uncover further information into sports broadcast journalism for example what it is like to be a sports broadcast journalist, The types of things that go into being a sports broadcast journalist. I researched what a broadcast sports journalist does. I found out what kind of research a sports journalist does and how a sports broadcast journalist would conduct their research. I also found out how they present in front of a camera, how they write a script, What they do when things go wrong, I found out the difference between being a radio sports journalist and a TV sports journalist. I will also find out what technology a sports journalist would, I also found out how video sports journalism is put together. Another thing I investigated is how a broadcast sports journalist would use social media to further their audience. I also investigated how a broadcast sports journalist would go about contacting people such as: interviewees, guests for shows and broadcasters. In order to acquire this information I used numerous sources, including primary and secondary sources. I chose this area of study as I am very interested in broadcast sports journalism and would like to become a sports commentator. Also, This would help with my FMP as for my FMP I have chosen this as my subject area.

Football commentary needs to be simultaneously formal yet informal in order to keep the audience interested as the language is easy to understand and the viewers/ listeners are attentive to the information relayed. This helps engage the audience as they watch on TV, the atmosphere of the stadium is lost and this helps bring some of it into your homes to help audiences grasp the importance of games whilst describing the action. For example, Jonathon Pierce from Match of the Day on BBC 1 (1/12/18) in his commentaries, gets very excited when a team scores or is close to scoring to add drama to the matchbox racing his tone of voice and using powerful language to make clear the importance of the chance/goal.

The second point picked out was that a journalist must be trained in all media to pick out bits of floating information that maybe useful to them. A journalist must also prepare weeks in advance for a fixture they are commentating on in order to have the maximum amount of information as possible and be as prepared as possible even if not all the information they acquire is used.

Literature Review

My aim for this investigation was to uncover further information into the field for example what it is like to be a sports broadcast journalist, The types of things that go into being a sports broadcast journalist. I researched what a broadcast sports journalist does. I found out what kind of research a sports journalist does and how a sports broadcast journalist would conduct their research. Another thing I investigated is how a broadcast sports journalist would use social media to further their audience. I also investigated how a broadcast sports journalist would go about contacting people such as: interviewees, guests for shows and broadcasters.

I did primary and secondary research. How I went about doing my research was to first evaluate a piece which was my primary research. I then found a book with information I required in them and extract that information first. I then found sources online and extracted information from them.

The first source I used was my primary research source which was a video of Match of the day 1/12/18 BBC 1. This source is reliable and credible as it has been submitted by a reliable and credible broadcast company and is recognised as the main outlet for weekly premier league highlights. This source is not biased as it represents the whole division. This source is relevant as it contains content which is essential to my field. This source was useful as I. was able to find out what I wanted to find out which was the style of commentary and the style of-resenting on this programme.

The second source I used was Sports Journalism, A practical Introduction (Andrews 2014). This source is reliable and valid because it is a published book, meaning that the reliability of the source has been checked. This source is not biased as it remains impartial. this source is relevant because it contains information that is key to my field. This source was useful as it contained information I needed which was how a journalist would use social media as a research source and how they would prepare for matches.

The next source I used was Sports Journalism: Changing journalism practice and digital media (Boyle 2017). This source is valid and credible as it is published by a trustworthy body. It is relevant as it touches upon topics within my investigation. This source was useful because it contains information I needed which was how a journalists style would change depending on the organisation they are working for/with.

The next source I used was Making a play for sports journalism: tips and insights (Logan 2013). This source is valid and credible as it is a well known popular published newspaper, written by a credible writer. It is relevant as it is talking about reporting on sport and speaks bout broadcasting live which is my area of study. This source was useful because it contained information needed which was how broadcasting live works.

Overall, I believe my sources are good because they provided information which is relevant to my study. However, these sources were a little brief and could’ve had more information in them, but overall this hasn’t effected the quality of my research.

Story

Police records have shows a 1000% increase in racially aggravated hate crimes in schools in the UK.

A freedom of information request has revealed that since 2014 the number of hate crimes has increased from 1 to 11.

The surge in racial hate crimes been acquitted to the increase in quality of the way the police force record hate crime. It also has been noted that specific events suchas the EU referendum has caused a serge.

A spokesperson for stonewall said: “Talks of hard borders included in the brexit deal has allowed people with prejudices to come out of their shell.”

He continued to say: “The government needs to get their hands dirty and condemn these actions, not just through laws as there is a law already in place to prevent this but it clearly isn’t working.”

However, This is not directed at race individually, a study has shown that 52% of hate crimes recorded are aimed at muslims.

Notes from source:

Broadcasting covers a broad range of career options, sometimes you may be broadcasting live. There is no script so the show evolves around the action and drama that unfolds during a match. There is only so much research you can do on the players or the history of a fixture. You never really know what you are going to end up talking about because every game is different.

Evaluation of source:

This source is valid and credible as it is a well known popular published newspaper, written by a credible writer. It is relevant as it is talking about reporting on sport and speaks bout broadcasting live which is my area of study.

Unit 12 Final Proposal

An Investigation Into Sports Broadcast journalism.

Aims:

My aim for this investigation is to uncover further information into the field for example what it is like to be a sports broadcast journalist, The types of things that go into being a sports broadcast journalist. I will be researching what a broadcast sports journalist does. I am going to find out what kind of research a sports journalist does and how a sports broadcast journalist would conduct their research. I will also find out how they present in front of a camera, how they write a script, What they down things go wrong, I will find out the difference between being a radio sports journalist and a TV sports journalist. I will also find out what technology a sports journalist would, I will also find out how video sports journalism is put together. Another thing I will investigate is how a broadcast sports journalist would use social media to further their audience. I will also be investigating how a broadcast sports journalist would go about contacting people such as: interviewees, guests for shows and broadcasters.

Rationale:

For my FMP I will be creating a presentation website to showcase my work as a sort of portfolio. I have chosen the design for my website based on the house style of sports journalists, specifically Dan walker.  I am conducting this research in order to further my knowledge to help me when it comes to my FMP in order to create the best possible content as a sports broadcast journalist. This research will help me produce 2 video pieces of higher quality along side 2 high quality audio pieces. The research into how a radio sports journalist goes about their job will be very useful when creating my 2 audio pieces. The research into how a video sports journalist goes about their job will be very useful when creating my 2 video pieces for my FMP. The knowledge I will gain from this research will help me create high quality work as I will understand how to produce it correctly meaning that there will be less mistakes within my work and therefore my work will be the highest possible quality and at a very high standard.

Unit 9- Proposal

For my video, I will be creating a short news story about the kelham island market which takes place on Saturday 1st December and Sunday 2nd December. This will include information about the event, shots of the event, Vox pops from people attending the event and hopefully an interview with person who sets up the event if possible. The video will be no more than 2 minutes and it will take the format of a usual news story for social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. This means that it will have text across the bottom as subtitles of what the voice over is reporting and what the interviewer is saying. The reasoning for this is that the majority of social media users will keep the volume muted and read the information given rather than listen to voice over. I will go at it with a local angle of what it brings to the city of Sheffield. This will include what the public think of the event, the types of products on offer, the popularity of the event and the Christmas spirit that the event brings to the city.

for this video I will use a DSLR to collect the footage for this video, I will need a tripod to mount the camera onto in order to get stable shots so the it is film in a professional manner. However, If the market is very busy, I may not have enough space to set up the tripod and therefore will not use this piece of equipment. Another piece of equipment I will be using is a ecliptic for my interviewee if I can get an interview with either one of the people on a stall or the person who set up the event. I will also need a zoom mic in order to record the audio for my Vox pops as it will be difficult/ inefficient to setup a clip mic  when asking a few questions to someone in a queue.

The reason I am doing this video is because it will be great for practising my skills as a video journalists. These skills include setting up a camera and filming, interview practice, editing skills etc. Also, it is a great local news angle and is perfect for social media.

I will have to ask for permission to film, interview a person on a stall or the person setting up the event and to get Vox pops. Also, if this video was for public use, I would have to ask permission of the people attending the event if they are ok with their faces being in the video or I would have blur their faces.

I have decided to change the event that I will be Filming because I believe that the story board I made for this event wasn’t to a high enough standard and I believe the I can produce a better quality video at the event I have chosen to replace it with. The new event will be the Vintage Christmas Weekend which will take place on weekend of the 15th-16th of December 2018. I decided to do this because I believe that it will make a more interesting video and gives me time to produce a better plan which in turn will help me produce a better video. The same principles for filming and editing apply for instance the style of video etc. The same legal implications also apply. The overall reason I am doing this video remains the same.
