Ethical Editing and Photo Manipulation

I have cropped this image to make the focus more on Steve and i have reduced the saturation in order to make Steve look healthier by making his skin less red and blue.

CC Manipulation

This image has been manipulated to remove the wrinkles from Cindy’s body and change her skin tone. This image was used on a magazines front cover after she did a shoot for them.

Many people believe this is unethical because it is creating unrealistic and unachievable expectations for young people when they get to her age and also middle aged women who are unsatisfied with their bodies.

WHAT IS IMAGE MANIPULATION?

Editing or taking an image to convey a certain message or thing.

THINK OF INSTANCES/SITUATIONS WHERE IMAGE MANIPULATION IS REGULARLY USED.

Image manipulation is regularly used in the modelling industry to make the models look better than they do. The technique usually used is “Airbrushing”.

THINK OF INSTANCES WHERE IMAGES HAVE BEEN UNETHICALLY MANIPULATED.

In the modelling industry the images of models are usually unethically modified so that the models are changed that much that they not recognisable and gives unrealistic expectations to many teenagers and young people around the world

WHAT ARE YOU PERSONAL OPINIONS ON IMAGE MANIPULATION?

My personal opinion is that it is ok to edit photos to make them better for things like artistic photography for painting, personal use images and promotional purposes such as film posters, album cover art and other performance based industries. However, I believe that it should not be used in the modelling industry because it is creating unrealistic and unhealthy expectations for young people and therefore can be dangerous and is a huge problem in todays society.
